The History Of Weaving With Reeds
In all cultures around the world, humanity has been weaving various items from reeds since the beginning of time. It was a matter of necessity for early man to create items from reeds like shoes, hats, baskets, beds, and many other useful items for living. Take a look at Egyptian history and you will discover that weaved baskets have been found in tombs. They even make boats from reeds.
Materials You Will Need For Weaving
- Reeds you harvested or purchased
- Strong string
- Things to hang reeds up with or a line to hang them on
- A cutting tool of some kind
- A container with warm water in it for soaking reeds
- A towel to dry the wet reeds
You Can Learn To Weave With Reeds
Reeds can be found in the forest. You can use bamboo reeds or any other wild reeds you can harvest. If you would like to practice weaving with reeds you can make your way to the local craft store and they may have them for sale. The reeds should be ready for you to practice the craft if you should ever need it in a survival situation. It can be very fun to learn the craft of reed weaving.
Step 1
Grab a handful of reeds, maybe about ten or twelve, and tie the ends together. You will want to put them up to dry if they are wet. Hand them inside somewhere there is plenty of air so they will dry completely. It shouldn’t take long. I would let them dry out for at least a week or you can check them to see when they are completely dry and ready for use. If you live in a very humid climate it may take a little longer.
Step 2
It may sound strange but after the reeds are dry you will want to get them wet in warm water just a couple at a time. Let them soak well for about ten minutes. After the reeds have soaked, take them out and wipe them with a towel to get all the water off. Soaking the reeds will make them flexible and free from breaking while you are creating. Just soak a couple of reeds at a time and if the water cools off you may want to get more warm water.
Conclusion
If you ever find yourself out in the wild and need materials to survive it is important to remember that you can create things that can help you. Reeds can provide you with the material you need to make objects. Think of the various items you could create. You can make a blanket, clothing, and just about anything else you can think of. Use your imagination!
